2025 Summer Reading Program – Color Our World

Summer Reading begins Saturday, June 7 and runs through August 16, 2025

Kids from birth through age 19 can earn awesome prizes for logging their reading and activities over the summer! Summer Reading programs help students retain their current reading levels during summer vacation and avoid the dreaded “summer slide.” Reading whatever interests them also helps to instill a life-long love of reading!

Friends Book Sale – Tuesdays in the library community room. Whatever your favorite genre, you’ll find something to love at the Friends Book Sale! Book Sale hours are Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., except for the second Tuesday of each month when the sale will end at 5:30 p.m. for a library program.

“Budding Bookworms” Preschool Storytime – Every Wednesday at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Stories and an easy craft for ages 3-6 with adult. No storytime on June 18. Join us that day at St. Paul Lutheran Church at 10 a.m. for Mark DeRose Art & Music Show instead!

“Twinkling Stars” Baby Storytime & “The Young and the Restless” Toddler Time – From June 12- August 21, there will be no Baby and Toddler storytimes. Join us instead for special Thursday morning events!

Technology Help – Fridays by appointment from 1-3 p.m. Could you use some help with your mobile devices? Or maybe you want to learn Word or apply for a job online? Come to the library! Library staff will provide free one-on-one training, assistance with online job applications, or help with your electronic device. STEAM Saturday – No STEAM in June July August

Mah-Jongg Group – First Monday from 6-8:30 p.m. Experienced players as well as people wanting to learn are invited to drop in to play Mah-Jongg. For adults and teens.

Genealogy Group – Tuesday, June 10, July 8, August 12 from 6:30-7:45 p.m. This group meets at the library on the second Tuesday of each month for short talks from genealogy researcher Ken McCrea, along with lively discussions and research help. For older students and adults. Beginners and walk-ins are welcome.

Book Club – Monday, June 23, July 21 and August 18 from 6-7 p.m. Join us at Adamstown Area Library for our new monthly Book Club! Share your thoughts on that month’s book and get to know other readers in your community. All are welcome, regardless of whether you’ve finished the book. For our June meeting, we’ll be reading The God of the Woods by Liz Moore. Copies of the book are available through our online catalog or by calling or visiting a branch. Please register.

Castaneda’s Library Fundraiser – June 25, July 30, August 27 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. On the last Wednesday of each month, 10% of all proceeds at Castañeda’s Mexican Restaurant in Denver go to the Adamstown Area Library! Forgotten Friends Reptile Show – Monday, June 9 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Adamstown. Reptiles are amazing artists! Each species has its own colorful way of surviving, to defend territory, and to attract a mate. Can you dance like a lizard? Can you sing like an alligator? Can you camouflage your colors like a box turtle, or boast your bright colors to advertise venom, like a coral snake? You’ll learn all this, and more, as you meet Jesse Rothacker and his rescued reptiles, in the “Animal Art Forms” interactive show! All ages.

Toddler Color Run – Thursday, June 12 Drop-in 10-11:30 AM at the library. Red, Blue & Yellow can make Green, Orange & Purple. Miss Jess will read stories about colors and then we will watch your Toddler race through the paint. Plenty of water & wipes will be provided for cleanup; but be sure to dress your child in old clothes and slip off shoes! For ages 1-3.

The Amazing World of Honeybees: From Hive to Ecosystem – Thursday, June 12 at 6 pm. Honeybees are fascinating creatures that play a crucial role in our ecosystem. Join us as we explore how honey is made, bee biology, behavior, and the significant impact they have on agriculture and the environment. Attendees can get their questions answered and see the brand-new Observation Hive! For adults, teens, and tweens. Please register.

Rock Painting – Friday, June 13 at 10 a.m. at Schoeneck Park. We supply the materials; you bring your creativity. All rocks will be added to our new library pet “William Snakespeare”! Paper Sculptures – Monday, June 16, Drop-in 10-11:30 at the library. Create a “Zany” colorful construction paper sculpture to display at the library for the remainder of the summer! All Ages.

Combining visual arts & song writing with activities to inspire you to embrace creativity and individuality. He will have you singing, acting, dancing, and playing his one-of-a-kind instruments. Toddler Parachute Play – Thursday, June 19, Drop-in 10-11:30 a.m. at Adamstown Grove. Play & learn together with parachute games and songs that encourage physical activity and develop motor coordination with social skills. For ages 1-3.

Let’s Explore a Stream – Friday, June 20 at 10 a.m. at Reamstown Community Park. Get into the water and collect critters that live in our local waterways. Be sure to wear closed toe/back shoes. Lanc County Dept. of Parks & Rec. All ages.

Raven Ridge Wildlife Show – Monday, June 23 at 10 a.m. at Peace United Church of Christ, Denver. Come see PA reptiles, mammals, and birds of prey, up close… like a skunk!!! This will be a program you will be talking about for a long time to come. All ages.

Toddler Play-Doh Party – Thursday, June 26, Drop-in 10-11:30 a.m. at the library. Rolling, flattening, squishing, and building with playdough helps strengthen hand muscles which are important for writing and scissor skills. For ages 1-3.

Crazy about Rainbows – Friday, June 27 at 10 a.m. at Chapel Gate Park. When do we see rainbows and why? Put on a pair of rainbow glasses and see all the beautiful colors of light. Together we will read a book, play games and complete a craft. Lanc County Dept. of Parks & Rec. All ages.

Flavor-Burst Ice Cream Taste Testing – Monday, June 30 at 12 p.m. at Adamstown Grove. On these hot days, what better way to cool off than with a “cool” treat! Guess the flavor and then vote for your favorite. Thank you to Kountry Korner for sponsoring this “DELICIOUS” program! All Ages.

Jewelry Swap – Thursday, June 26 at 6 pm. Swap the jewelry you no longer want for items you will love. Bring your unwanted item(s) in good condition to the library. One at a time, everyone chooses something to take home. After everyone gets one thing, it’s free-for-all. Anything left over at the end is donated to charity. Clean out your house, find something new to you, and get your unwanted jewelry to someone who will actually use it! Snacks provided. For adults and teens. Please register.

The Colorful World of Insects – Thursday, July 3 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Adamstown. Nature is all about colors, and not biting or stinging humans. Bugs and insects have almost unlimited colors. But what are these colors used for? Ryan Bridge “The Bug Man” will focus on how bugs and insects use color to survive one more day. As always, everyone will have the chance to pet and hold the live bugs! All Ages.

Speed Art – Monday, July 7 at the library. Time depends on age group: Age 5-9 at 10 a.m., age 10-15 at 10:30 a.m. and age 16+ at 11 a.m. Paint as fast as possible, pass it to the left, and create again! Every 5 minutes we pass to our neighbor until our original piece is returned. End the program by sharing a story about the artwork! All ages.

Toddler Colored Pom-Poms Sorting – Thursday, July 10, Drop-in 10-11:30 a.m. at the library. This activity with tongs develops memory skills, hand strength, coordination, and concentration.

A Brush with Birds – Friday, July 11 at 10 a.m. at Brubaker Park. Birds come in every color of the rainbow, which helps them complete many tasks like finding their friends, hiding from predators and more! We’ll enjoy storytime with “Birds from Head to Tail” and make our own colorful birds to take home. Lanc County Dept. of Parks & Rec. All Ages.

Christmas in July Cookie Decorating – Monday, July 14, drop in 10-11:30 a.m. at the library. All ages. Registration is required.

Master Gardener Pollinator Storytime – Wed, July 16 @ 10 & 11 AM at the library. A guest reader from Penn State Extension Master Gardener organization will entertain with puppets, bee and butterfly stories, and hand out seed packets. All Ages.

Toddler Painting with Cars & Trucks – Thursday, July 17, Drop in 10-11:30 a.m. at the library. Run different size vehicles through paint and then “drive” them on your paper. Process art is beneficial for building confidence and fostering creativity. For ages 1-3.

Colorful Scavenger Hunt – Friday, July 18 at 10 a.m. at Denver Community Park. Discover how an animal’s color helps them survive, go on a scavenger hunt to explore the colors of nature first-hand and listen to the story “Crayola Wild World of Animal Colors.” Lanc County Dept. of Parks & Rec. All ages.

Stained Glass Glue Craft – Monday, July 21, Drop-in 10-11:30 a.m. at the library. This STEAM activity will make a colorful art material that looks bright in the light! All ages.

Toddler Pretty Pom Pom Wall – Thursday, July 24, Drop-in 10-11:30 a.m. at the library. This vertical tube & tunnel activity will have little ones experimenting while using their problem-solving skills. For ages 1-3.

Glitter Critters – Friday, July 25 at 10 a.m. at Adamstown Grove. Learn about all that shimmers and sparkles in the animal world while looking at pictures and preserved specimens and paint a beetle picture using natural mica glitter. Lanc County Dept. of Parks & Rec. All ages.

Stained Glass Sidewalk Chalk Art – Monday, July 28, Drop-in 10-11:30 a.m. at the library. Help us decorate the front doorsteps and ramp for our upcoming “End of Summer” Party. All ages.

Toddler Magnet Painting – Thursday, July 31 Drop-in 10-11:30 a.m. at the library. Enjoy making a masterpiece as you discover what magically happens when science and art are wrapped up in one. For ages 1-3.

Faux Stained Glass – Wednesday, July 23 at 6 pm. Make an easy faux stained-glass image in a recycled picture frame with your choice of templates. For adults & teens. Registration is required.

End of Summer Party – Saturday, August 2, Drop-in 9:30-11 a.m. at the library. Let’s celebrate all you have accomplished this summer! Entertainment by Sneakers the Clown, painted handprints on the Borough’s Snowplow, delicious Cookies, & Raffle Prizes (6 mo. Family Membership to Reading Public Museum). Also, be sure to return your Summer Reading Log to receive prizes! All ages.

“Art, Interrupted” Program – Monday, August 4, Drop-in 10-11:30 a.m. at the library. Did you know that many famous artists left behind unfinished works? You get to “finish” them in a fun and creative way! All ages.

Seed Saving Basics – Wednesday, August 6 at 6 pm. Discover the reasons to save your own seeds, methods for collecting and preserving the seeds, and the best plants to use to get started with seed saving. For adults & teens. Please register.

Toddler Musical Art – Thursday, August 7, Drop-in 10-11:30 a.m. at the library. How does the music move you? Little ones will respond to the sounds with colors to create a beautiful picture. For ages 1-3.

DIY Marble Pencils – Monday, August 11, Drop-in 10-11:30 a.m. at the library. It’s back to school time! This fun and easy project will get you excited for September! All ages.

Q-Tip & Tummy Time Painting – Thursday, August 14, Drop-in 10-11:30 a.m. at the library. Squish, Draw, & Paint “cleanly” within a sealed baggie. For ages 1-3.

“Color Our World” Play & Learn Center – All Summer. This “primary & secondary hued” area is a great place to hang out for some educational fun with a tunnel, gross motor toys, puppets, vocab, figures, blocks, and more. All ages.

Bluey Scavenger Hunt – All Summer. Pick up a flyer at the circulation desk, search for all the characters from your favorite show in the Children’s room and return for a prize.

MJWK (Miss Jess wants to Know) – All month. Teens, we want your opinion! Stop in the Young Adult and Teen Graphic Novel Book Section of the library for the question of the month! With this simple voting passive program, teens can vote with a sticker dot to select their favorite. Results will be posted on our Facebook page at the end of the month.
